Navigate 1.1.1 Delineating Between Synchronous and Asynchronous Content

I created a simple chart showing some of the differences between synchronous and asynchronous learning.

Synchronous Asynchronous

  • Positives:
    • real-life
    • involved
    • interactive
    • communication
    • instant feedback
    • immediacy

  • Positives:
    • extra time for thought
    • flexibility
    • easily accessible technology like email


  • Negatives:
    • labor intensive for instructors
    • technology glitches and malfunctions
    • not as flexible
    • often uses “newer” technology

  • Negatives:
    • independent study
    • lack of immediacy
    • slower feedback


  • Tools:
    • text
    • phone
    • video conferencing (eg. Skype)
    • virtual classroom (eg. Blackboard)


  • Tools:
    • email
    • discussion boards/forums
    • e-portfolios
    • wikis/blogs
